Overview

This is a great, high altitude loop ride that riders of intermediate skill will be able to tackle. Utilizing portions of the famous Colorado Trail, as well as portions of a well-maintained bike path, this is sure to be an enjoyable ride for all.

You'll be at high altitude, so taking some time to acclimate, and bringing plenty of water and sunscreen is a must.

Description

The Twin Lakes Trail for the most part is a beginner mountain bike trail with a few sections of hike a bike, hence the intermediate rating. The description written is for traveling East to West. Start at the Twin Lakes Visitor Center and travel East sharing Hwy 82 for a few miles. Look for a singletrack on the right - this is the Colorado Trail, and it shares a section with the Twin Lakes trail. It's hard to spot - use the mobile app.

Travel on this fast and flat trail for a few miles until you reach the far Eastern side of the lake. The trail begins to climb slightly and enters into the forest along the Southern side of the lake. You'll come to an intersection, the Colorado Trail breaks off here as you continue straight. You'll soon come to the Interlaken Lodge, a turn of the century relic that is worth exploring.

Continue west along the Southern shore. The trail soon crosses the Continental Divide Trail which climbs steadily on your left. Continue straight. The next section of trail crosses a few streams that may require walking. You'll soon be riding into an area that will require a few small hikes.

Once down on the other side you'll soon cross a bridge and then back on Hwy 82. Ride 82 for a short time back to the visitor center for your well-deserved soft-serve from the market.
