Description

This trail combines old doubletrack with newer singletrack to provide a fairly straightforward "uphill" route from the Banks-Vernonia State Trail to the northern access point of Stub Stewart's MTB-only area.

From there, one can enjoy the awesome singletrack back "down" to the Banks-Vernonia State Trail and coast back to the Buxton Trailhead. Hares Canyon technically keeps going past the MTB-only area, but most mountain bikers will probably not want to go any further!

When climbing uphill on the Banks-Vernonia State Trail, Hares Canyon Trail shoots off to the right just a little ways past the very short Felling's Wedge connector trail, which is marked with a "MTB Area" sign. Hares Canyon Trail is marked alongside the several other trails that crisscross inside of Stub Stewart State Park.

Hares Canyon Trail is pretty much one long climb, but it rarely gets very steep. The southern half (everything below the junction with Widowmaker Way) is mostly singletrack with some traces of old doubletrack thrown in. The northern half is mostly doubletrack, although some newer singletrack connecting trails split off from the main route to add some more exciting routes to the true destination: the MTB-only access point.

You'll know the MTB-only access point when you see it. There is a nice little kiosk with maps, a hitching post to hang bikes from, and even a little bench to rest on.

100% not a mountain bike trail. It's a road. If you follow the direction recommended, you'll be climbing almost the entire time. There's no reason…

Lots of timber work going on now. Trail is kind of wrecked, and unattractive in parts due to the work. Trail closed on weekdays currently.
