Climb 1,780 feet over four miles on doubletrack and overgrown doubletrack. There are several short sections that exceed 15% grade.

Once on top at four miles, the trail transitions to nice flowing doubletrack with occasionally overgrown singletrack where the trail gets some sunlight. Circle the small Birchfield Camp Lake and return with the last four miles on well-earned downhill.

This is a multi-purpose trail for bikes, hikers, and horses, so please be courteous to other trail users and yield the right of way.

Out of the parking lot, turn right up to the Rocky Fork Trail adjacent to Rocky Fork Creek with large boulders and cascades. At about 0.5 miles, turn right onto the start of the White Oak Flats Trail. The trail continues to climb with some steep sections for 1.3 miles where White Oak Flats Trail becomes Birchfield Camp Trail at the intersection with the Headwaters Trail. Keep to the right and continue to climb Birchfield Camp Trail. There are some steep sections until the four-mile mark.

At the end of Birchfield Camp Trail, bear right and travel approximately 0.8 miles to the next intersection of four trails. Turn right and head downhill to the five-acre lake. At the dam end of the lake, keep left and climb back to the four-trail intersection.

Bear right on Higgins Ridge Detour to avoid a mile of backtracking and begin a gradual descent through overgrown doubletrack for 1.2 miles. Take the next two left turns and climb gradually back to the beginning of Birchfield Camp Trail. Turn right on Birchfield Camp Trail and return the way you came traveling downhill for 4.3 miles back to the parking lot.

Birchfield Camp Lake was originally built by loggers to fight forest fires.
