A Forest Adventure Pass is required to park at Blue Jay/SJT Trailhead. It's $5/day or $30/year at Cleveland Nat'l Forest offices, or daily passes can be bought at the Ortega Oaks Candy Store.

Description

Chiquito Trail is typically a shuttle because you're dropped onto Ortega Highway. You can shuttle down from Blue Jay Campground, or climb Old San Juan Trail to New San Juan Trail. Climbing SJT and completing the Chiquito Trail is doable, but very challenging.

The trail has some technical features that can only be ridden by very advanced riders but are short and easily walked over. Built-up features exist throughout the trail, but they are tastefully built to integrate with the surroundings, so if you want to ride them, you have to look for them.

There's a long climb at the end, so keep some gas in the tank to keep from bonking at the end. This is especially the case if you rode up SJT.

This is a long and physically challenging route through the Cleveland National Forest area that's commonly referred to as the San Juan Lollipop Loop. In total I logged 23 miles with 4300 feet of climbing.

Wildly overgrown with extremely sharp brush encroaching on the trail at face, arm and leg level, washed out, and treacherous with loose rocks.
