Need to Know

New trail. Many loose sections especially on the tight switchbacks at the bottom that need to be rolled in. On switchbacks, climb high on the berms to avoid all the loose stuff.

Description

Starting from the Juniper Canyon trails, this trail is a left fork heading to the west off the main Juniper/Rose Bench Trail. The first section starts off easy along the backyards of some of the nearby homes.

From there, the climbing of the switchbacks begins. No other way to describe it other than back and forth over rock and dirt. Once you climb the switchbacks on the northwest side of the hill, you'll cross over and remain on the southeast side of the mountain for the remainder of the climb. Again, you'll be climbing hard right and left switchbacks that are fun to descend.

At about 1.1 miles from the start, you'll have cleared the most difficult parts of the climb. From here, the trail straightens out for a gradual 3-5 degree climb to the top. You'll pass through some open sections with no shade and then some in the tree section at around 1.7 miles. Then some more switchbacks that are much more gradual to eventually turn you back to the north as you climb to the top of the ridge.

At the fork at the top, you can continue straight and slightly left at the fork on Eric's Trail to the fun downhill section or turn right and head down the slightly tamer Mustang trail. Or use either as a loop to bring you back to descend back down the way you came.

This is the preferred direction of the trail, but it can be ridden both ways. From the top of Mustang, you take the right fork by continuing to head southeast. There is a 0.5-mile flat section before you reach the hilltop. The hilltop has been marked with a cairn. At this point, drop your seat and enjoy the ride. You'll take an easy right at the beginning and then flow over a jump and a short drop. This is followed by a hard left, then release the brakes and flow over and through a fun jump section with a gradual turn around the ridge where you can see Mustang trail climbing north.

Around the corner as you head southwest, you flow through more jumps and terrain features. From here, it switches back a couple of times with a great main trail and alternate trail features. At the bottom, you'll arrive back at the fork that if you take the right it will take you back up Mustang for another loop around or you can continue straight to the southwest to head down Blackridge trail.
