Overview

Very fun trail with lots of singletrack, easy climbs, good switchbacks, one short advanced technical section, and fast roller coaster descents. This trail can be ridden in either direction, but clockwise is the most fun.

Need to Know

The main parking area at Sand Cove trailhead is located up a rough road that should only be attempted with high clearance vehicles. Most people park just off the paved road and ride the singletrack up to this trailhead. There is a good map at the Sand Cove trailhead showing all of the trails in the network. Barrel Roll is the most popular.

Description

Begin by parking off Gates Lane in Santa Clara, Utah. Look for the singletrack trail heading south up the hill. Hop on this trail and start climbing. You'll eventually pass a water tank, after which the trail levels out and continues until it T's at a dirt road. Take a right and head up the road, where you'll quickly see the parking area for the Cove Wash trailhead on your left.

From the Sand Cove trailhead head west onto the Barrel Roll singletrack. Clockwise is the best way to ride this loop. There are several intersections with other trails in the network, but they are well marked. It is easy to find your way around this loop. Precipice, and Sidewinder are two short extension that you can easily add to this loop. Take a look at the map at the trailhead and decide for yourself. They are a little harder than the main Barrel Roll trail, but fun.

At about 3 miles (ridden clockwise) the trail drops into a short technical section that demands advanced riding skills. It's fun, but walk it if it's above your skill level.

Did Sidewinder in there too. Fun ride with some tough technical sections. Downhill on the clockwise return was pretty flat and uninteresting. 11mi — 1h 35m
